Windows Phone 8

Will Windows Phone 8 Succeed?

Now that the new Lumia range is announced, is it finally time that Microsoft actually gained some attention in the smartphone world? Yes to us who follow technology daily, we are all familiar with the latest and greatest gadgets, but to normal consumers windows phone is still something unheard of. If I asked my friends or family, do you know what windows phone is? The first thing they will ask is “whats that?” and then after explaining they will ask again “so what is so great about it?”. What I am trying to get at is that we all know even if a great product is made it doesn't mean it will be successful, as we can see with the HTC ONE X. The Lumia range has captured our imaginations and hearts with its completely new and innovative design but now it’s Nokia’s and Microsoft’s time to really shine where it arguably matters, advertising and teaching people why this product is the one you should choose above everything else. They need to go all out and capture the emotions of everyday consumers. With the iPhone 5 creeping around the corner it’s vital that they deliver on all cylinders.

BlackBerry 10 – A Promising Prospect?

BlackBerry 10 – A Promising Prospect?

So today we were showed the developer version of the BlackBerry 10 at their BlackBerry World Conference and it looks a breath of fresh air. It is not a hidden fact that RIM has been struggling and they have gotten no sympathy from those who write about technology for their downfall in smartphone prowess. This mainly due to the fact that they were constantly in denial that they were still a successful company in developing companies. The latest quarter results lead to the media quickly speculating that RIM was going to abandon their consumers and only concentrate on their business customers but that was a matter of bad translation. Thorsten Heins was quick to dismiss these rumours and I’m glad he did as blackberry 10 actually looks really nice. RIM finally realised that touch UI is the way forward and that was what their new software is focused on. the new developer phone will feature a jaw-dropping 4.2-inch, 1280 x 768 display(finally). No word on the processor speed but I’m sure it’ll be up there with competiton. Yes the competition being that of Apple(iOS) and Google(Android). I have not counted Windows phone here as the future for that platform still seems unclear to me but I do hope Microsoft are also in the mix in the next few years. BlackBerry finally seems to be moving forward and its bold new OS has a lot of potential but let’s not forget that this is how we all felt with webOS and that was hugely successful, right? RIM has the chance to be succeed as they control both the hardware and software just like apple and so if they can merge that together into a beautiful product then they have deal with half the battle. The other half off course being the ecosystem which nowadays seems to hold consumers to their products. Consumers depend a huge amount on their ability to attain the best apps out there and that is the reality of modern day smartphone purchasing. RIM’s job from now on will be to get developers to spend their valuable time and effort building towards their OS so that they can be a force in the modern day war for smartphone dominance. Competition is always good, better for us the consumers who are the most important aspect in this business. If RIM can convince millions of us out there, to spend money on their products then that will only the make future of products in this industry even better. Consumers will only benefit if RIM can add a much needed third in this duopoly of Apple and Android. only time will tell what comes out of what seems is RIM’s final plunge in the smartphone market and I for one am hopeful this promising prospect delivers.
